The Beginner’s Tool Box - I just need the basics.

Moving out on your own?  Or Just purchased your 1st home?

Every household should have at least one functional toolbox. When it comes to simple repairs or small do it yourself  jobs around your home, a butter knife can only go so far.

Tasks such as nailing, screwing, gluing, cutting and sealing just to name a few, are all simple tasks anyone can handle with a basic tool box of basic everyday tools. Not using the proper tools for a task can cause damage to the object or injury to you.

Now let’s get you set-up. First thing let's get a toolbox to put everything in. Nothing fancy, just a basic plastic 14 to16 inch tool box. Next we need to decide where to put the toolbox. In a small place with no garage, try to find a place where it can be centrally located but yet out of sight of everyday view. That can be in the cabinet under the sink in the kitchen, a centrally located bathroom or on the floor in a centrally located closet. If you have a garage, just make room for it in there.

Next let’s fill the tool box. Safety first, so let’s add some gloves and safety goggles. Don’t buy the cheap ones, you are worth more. Remember you want these tools to last and be in good shape for when you need them. Make sure they fit properly and protect your hands and eyes. You are going to be handling tools with these on. Right?

Next let’s add a set of standard size basic screwdrivers. One flat head and one Phillip's head will do for now. Next let’s put a standard size hammer in the toolbox. Now let’s get a set of pliers. This should include a pair of groove pliers, a pair of slip joint pliers, a pair of locking pliers and an adjustable wrench. 8 out of 10 times when we get something out of the toolbox it is going to be one of the above tools. Now let’s add a small level and a standard measuring tape. Try to get one with a Self-centering tape. The bottom measurements show the midpoint of any measurement.

Now for the cutting tasks let’s add a utility knife and a pair of  heavy duty multi-purpose scissors.  Next a very small ratchet set and a battery powered drill with a small bit and driver set. Okay,  that is enough for now, Remember we are beginners not home pros. Let’s round this out with a pencil and small pad, a permanent marker, basic white glue, a small tube of sealant or caulk and a small set of Allen wrenches.

It is my hope this list of tools will handle 90% of the task you will have to tackle. Of course it is not a complete set of tools for every task but it should hold its own. A link to all the tools mentioned above will be below.
Thanks for the time.
